Children’s Museum Sports Legends Experience Books

by

After years of planning and construction, the Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience opened in March 2018. This much anticipated permanent exhibit—the largest expansion of the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis in 40 years—encourages children and families to participate in health and fitness activities through sports. Twelve outdoor sports activities within a 7.5-acre site invite visitors to shoot hoops, pass or kick a football, drive a mini Indy pedal car and much more. Bronze statutes of local sports legends stand in the park-like setting to inspire visitors to try for legendary status.

The Children’s Museum is also the new home of one of the country’s unique art collections—The National Art Museum of Sport (NAMOS) which is dedicated to celebrating sport through art. In 2017, The Children’s Museum acquired the NAMOS collection of nearly 1,000 works, including pieces by Winslow Homer, George Bellows, LeRoy Neiman and Donald Moss. The permanent gallery is housed within the Efroymson Pavilion in the Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience.

We had the opportunity to design two limited edition books created to commemorate the openings. Legends: The Sports Figures on the Old National Bank Sports Legends Avenue of Champions features profiles of the legendary athletes who are the subjects of the bronze statues and Sports Through the Artist’s Eye: Selections From the National Art Museum of Sport highlights some of the stars of the NAMOS collection.
